Why should I study BTEC Extended Certificate in Computer Games Design?
Why should I study this subject?
Throughout the course you will look at the way creative industries operate and impact upon the real world by exploring a range of media products.
What will I study?
The course is assessed over four units, two of which are externally assessed.
The units covered are: Media Representations, Responding to a commission, Pre-production Portfolio, Digital Games Production.
What are the entry requirements?
Level 4 in English Language.
What skills do I need?
Creativity, good time management, a fertile imagination.
How will I be taught?
You will be taught through a combination of lectures & group tasks. You will be expected to work independently to develop an individual portfolio.
How will I be assessed?
The course will be assessed through combination of external exam, externally set and assessed units and internally assessed coursework.
What will the course prepare me for?
Specifically, the course is a good grounding for skills required on game development courses at university and also a job within the games industry. As media in general is a multi-disciplinary subject, you will also develop strong communication skills, time management, analytical ability and the independence required for a wide range of university courses or future employment opportunities.
How much private study should I expect to do?
A minimum of 41/2 hours study is expected with this time to be spent completing AV essays, preparing presentations, film & editing original media products.
What materials will I need to purchase?
A drawing pad and good quality pencils are an advantage but not essential.
What is the exam board?
This subject is for you if… you have a keen interest in the games industry and games in general, beyond just playing them for pure enjoyment.
This subject is not for you if… you are just interested in coding or programming video games. If you do not work well with long, project based tasks, then you may also find this course difficult.
