Interested in a career in the media / journalism? – BBC Project
I am very pleased that we have been selected to take part in a research project being undertaken by the Head of BBC News Gathering, Jonathan Munro. The project aims to encourage more young people to consider careers in journalism, media and the BBC, but it will also explore the barriers that may historically have prevented some groups from pursuing careers in journalism. In the aftermath of the Glenfell tragedy, for example, the BBC recognised that its news team lacked people with the first-hand experience of the community affected. Only by having a diverse team can broadcasters accurately report news stories from across the country and in different communities.
Ashley in the video and 2 other young people currently working in the BBC news team, along with Jonathan Munro, will be coming to college on Friday 23rd March to deliver a lunchtime session. It is a unique opportunity to:
1) Talk to young people currently working in a variety of roles in the BBC and find out how they got there;
2) To take part in a discussion about how BBC News can support a more diverse workforce and encourage people from a wider range of backgrounds to pursue careers in journalism;
3) Find out more about an opportunity for you to develop your own news story with the BBC.
For students that would like to get involved, you need to sign up at reception by Wednesday 21 March. The session will take place on the top floor of the LRC (provisionally), on Friday 23rd March, 12.30 – 1.30pm.
This is very much a one-off event and a great opportunity both to find out more about journalism and the BBC, but also to contribute to the research project.
