Corey Birnie, 18 from Worksop, has won a prestigious Computer Science scholarship from Durham University. Corey studied Maths, Computer Science, Physics and Chemistry at New College Doncaster from September 2018 after attending Retford Oaks school.
“Gaining this scholarship means that there is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders”, said Corey, “It grants me the freedom to fully commit myself to my studies at university. I am very excited to start my time at university, as a computer science student, and to learn more about what I enjoy.”
Speaking about his time at New College, Corey said, “I had a great but hard working 2 years at New College. The college managed to strike a balance between pushing me to my potential and giving me enough space to grow as a person. I heard about scholarships from a few other classmates applying for their own, I then got an email from Durham University (which I had received an offer from) outlining some scholarships I was eligible for and so I just went for it and applied.”
Head of School for Maths, IT and Computing, Mark Ibbertson, said, “Corey has worked incredibly hard over the last two years, always striving to improve his knowledge, skills and understanding. This has showed in his assessments. His NEA was one of the best I have ever seen, putting himself through the mill, recreating a 2D Mario Kart style game, and documenting it very professionally. To top it all off he is a great bloke too, and I have no doubt his fantastic work ethic will continue at Durham. I wish him every success in the future.”
